New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these medications should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
